Flop, river, turn in poker
Ready to dive into the thrilling world of poker? Let’s get started! Two cards (face down) are dealt to you at first, known as the hole cards. Yet another card is then dealt on the table which completes ‘the River’ round.
In Texas Hold’em and other popular poker variants, the flop, turn, and river are more than just cards – they’re game changers. They can take a weak hand and turn it into a winning one, or even crush that strong hand you bet on. The excitement of poker lies in the unpredictability of these community cards and the endless possibilities they create. Let’s learn all about flop turn river poker.
What is the flop in poker?
Three community cards are revealed in the center of the table during the flop stage. This is the moment where the game really begins to heat up and what follows is the excitement and anticipation.
It’s not just another round of card dealing, instead, it is a make-or-break moment for every player at the poker table. It’s the moment when you decide whether to continue playing or fold, based on the strength of your hand and the potential of the community cards. For judging the strength of your hand, you must be well aware of the poker sequences.
Apart, players must also be aware of the odds of improving their hand on the next stages — turn and river.
Here the three cards could be connected & coordinated, offering players many possibilities to make a strong hand. But, at the same time, they could be uncoordinated and disconnected, forcing you or your opponents to fold. Players must be able to adapt their strategy to the specific flop in play.
Strategies to play a flop
- Players must be able to read their opponents and make informed decisions based on their patterns and behavior. What you’re playing is a game of wit and strategy, where the slightest mistake can cost you the pot – and you don’t want that to happen, right?
- In order to succeed at the flop, you as a player must be able to stay calm under pressure and make quick, informed decisions. Be aware of your opponent’s position at the table and adjust your strategy accordingly. Try to read your opponents and anticipate their moves.
- If you have a strong hand after the flop, such as a pair or better, it is often a good idea to bet aggressively to build the pot and drive out players with weaker hands. However, if you have a weaker hand, such as a high card, it may be better to check or call to get the next community card on board without risking too many chips.

What is the turn in poker?
Also known as the fourth street, the ‘turn’ round in poker is one of the most important moments in the game. It is the 4th community card dealt face up on the table, after the flop but before the river.
This round is significant because it often determines the strength of a player’s hand and has the ability to change the dynamics of the game. By this time all players have 6 cards in total (2 hole cards that only they can see and four community cards that all the players can see). They must use these cards to make the best five-card poker hand where the player with the strongest ranking hand wins the pot.

 Strategies to play a turn
The turn card can significantly change the strength of your hand. So, you must take a moment to evaluate your hand and consider whether the turn card has improved or weakened it.
Keeping an eye on your opponent’s hands is also important as it may also impact their hand. Watch their patterns and look for any signs of strength or weakness.
The turn round can provide you with a great opportunity to bluff your opponents. But you should be careful enough not to overdo it. Play bluff only when you are sure you’ve read your opponents.
The turn round is a crucial point in the game of poker where you can make strategic deductions to improve your winning chances.
What is the River is poker?
After the turn, comes the River round where the fifth and final community card is dealt face-up on the table. It is indeed the last chance for players to improve their hand.
After the river, there are no more cards left to be dealt, and the remaining players in the game must use the best possible 5-card combo of 2-hole cards and the 5 community cards to form their final hand.
The river card can dramatically alter the outcome of the game, especially if players have been bluffing or slow-playing their hands till now.
The players who have made it till here now have 7 cards for making their best 5-card Texas hold’em hands (this includes 2 hole cards amalgamated with the five community cards on the table).
Strategies to play the River round
The strategy to play the river round is definitely different than strategies for other rounds because, with every prior street, there are always more cards to come that can help you as the player to improve your hand, but when it’s the river, you are stuck with what you have.

Just remember how your opponents have played their hand at each round so that you can make an informed decision on playing the River. The more attentive you were, more the inf that you were able to grab. If for example, your opponent has been playing quite aggressively on the flop and turn by raising but all of a sudden started playing very weakly on the River round by checking, it’s much more obvious that they are trying to trap you and others still in play and is trying to induce a bluff.
By this time, you would face any one of these three scenarios:
SCENARIO 1: You are confident about having the best hand
SCENARIO 2: You are confident about having the worst hand
SCENARIO 3: You are unsure about the strength of your hand against your opponents’
In SCENARIO 1, you must try to get as much money from your opponent/opponents as possible. You must take a bet and raise. What you have to try doing is entice the opponent into calling.
For SCENARIO 2, imagine your opponent bets big on the river, and you’re faced with a tough decision. Do you fold and cut your losses, or do you raise and try to bluff your way to victory?
If you find yourself in such a position, it’s important to remember one thing: when in doubt, fold it out. If you have a weak hand, it’s always better to fold rather than risk losing even more chips by trying to bluff at this moment.
In SCENARIO 3, it’s almost always better to play it safe and check behind your opponent. It’s because if you bet and get called, chances are that the other player has a hand that beats yours. But if you check and the cards are turned over, you might just be surprised to find that you have the winning hand.
So, in SCENARIO 3, it’s best to check it down and hope for the best. After all, it’s better to win a smaller pot than to lose a big one by making a risky bet. By playing it safe, you give yourself the best chance to win the hand, even if it means sacrificing the opportunity to make a big bluff. Remember, in poker, it’s not always about taking big risks – sometimes, it’s about making the smart play and coming out on top in the long run.
Why is it called the river in poker?
There are various theories about it. One is a fascinating connection to the Mississippi River. In the 19th century, poker was a popular game played on the riverboats that traveled up and down the Mississippi.
The second one lies back to poker’s early days when riverboats were a popular venue for the game. Back then, one of the most common methods of cheating was for a player to deal themselves an extra card from the deck so that they could improve their hand. It’s said that if they were caught, red-handed, they would be thrown into the river.
Why is it called the flop, turn river in poker?
Now that you already know how ‘the river’ got its name, it’s now time that we talk about the other two, yes, the flop and the turn.
It’s believed that the flop got its name because of the action that the dealer does while “flopping” the cards on the poker table while others make its connection with the sound that the dealer makes when they ‘flop’ the first three community cards on the poker table.
Finally, as for the turn, it’s believed that it’s something that would turn the tide of the players’ hand.  Others believe that it may have originated from the world of horse racing. When the horses come around the final turn, also known as ‘the finish’, it becomes clear that the end of the competition is near. Similarly, when the 4th community card called the ‘turn’ is dealt on the poker table, the hand is nearing an end or finish.
